Terrion Arnold CB Alabama: Scouting Report
Height: 6’0
Weight: 196
Overall
Terrion Arnold is a physical corner in Alabama’s 4-3, heavy zone and press man defense. After redshirting his freshman season and not seeing any action, he played in 25 games over the next 2 seasons, starting 21 of them. He had excellent production this past season and was a constant playmaker on film.
Pass Game
In the pass game, Arnold played both man and zone coverage while lining up all over the field. In zone, he has good speed to cover his area and has very good vision in reading the quarterback’s eyes and attacking the football. He has the speed to cover deep thirds in cover 3 and in cover 2 he does a good job of attacking down hill and making plays on underneath routes. In man coverage he played both off man and press on film. In off man he showed some struggles in his ability to change direction at the top of routes. At times he shows the ability to stick his foot in the ground and make quick breaks on the ball but other times, he takes multiple steps to regain control allowing receivers to create separation on comebacks and hitches. Against go routes in off man, he has the speed to keep up with receivers but he is far too grabby on initial contact which resulted in multiple penalties this past season. In press man, he excelled on film. He had inconsistent footwork in his initial backpedal but he showed the athleticism and physicality to stay on top of routes and squeeze receivers to the sidelines down the field. At the catch point, he continues to use his physicality to break up passes by playing through the receiver’s hands and knocking the ball away. He made a few tough hands catches as well on film to reinforce his ability to make big plays in the pass game.
Run Game
Against the run, Arnold is a tone-setting player who made big plays on the ball-carrier all over the field. He is aggressive in getting off blocks on the outside and he is a very good open field tackler. At times he used his shoulder to try to make a play resulting in running backs and receivers bouncing off of him but he often wrapped up and drove his feet after contact. His physicality and effort to stop the run will be extremely valuable at the next level.
Last Word
Arnold projects best as a boundary corner who has the flexibility of playing in the slot if needed. His physicality will make him very valuable to press man teams and his speed and ball skills will allow him to play zone coverage at a high level. His inside/outside versatility will make him a good 3rd down contributor early in his career and his aggressiveness and tackling skills will make him dominant on special teams as well.
One-Liner: Terrion Arnold is a physical corner who excels against the run and in press coverage but his struggles in off-man and his holding of receivers at the top of routes will need to be fixed before he can be a true number 1 corner.
