Blake Corum RB Michigan: Scouting Report

Height: 5’8

Weight: 213

Overall

Blake Corum is an undersized but explosive running back in Michigan’s run-heavy offense. In his 4 seasons with the Wolverines he played in 45 games, starting 27 of them. He suffered a season ending knee injury his Junior year causing him to miss the final 2 games after undergoing surgery. This past season though he looked back to 100% and seems to have no limitations in his game. He had excellent production during his college career and he has the talent to play a role at the next level.

Run Game

Corum has a low center of gravity and has the footwork to make quick cuts in the backfield to dodge defenders and get to the open gap. He has good vision and patience to follow his blocks. He has very good acceleration and burst once he hits the open running lane and he has the speed to get to the edge and create big plays up the field. Even with his lack of size, he is a physical back and he does a good job of keeping his legs churning at the end of plays to gain extra yardage. If he gets contacted behind the line of scrimmage though he struggles breaking free and he goes down early in plays.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Corum had sufficient production as a receiver but is best used as an outlet option rather than a vertical threat down the field. He has good hands and continues to show his explosiveness after the catch as he accelerates up the field in a hurry. Even with his lack of size he had success as a pass protector. He showed the physicality to attack incoming defenders and he is not afraid to put his body on the line to protect the quarterback. He may have some struggles against bigger, more aggressive NFL defenders but he has the ability to be an extra blocker if needed.

Last Word

Corum projects best as a change of pace running back in a balanced offense. He has a very good burst through the line of scrimmage but he had the luxury of playing behind a dominant offensive line in college and he struggles to get yardage when the play breaks down. He is a sufficient receiver and pass protector but he will need to prove that he can block NFL sized defenders before he can be a reliable 3rd down back. He was used as a kickoff returner during his sophomore season and had good success making him an immediate option on special teams.

One-Liner: Blake Corum is undersized and struggles breaking tackles behind the line of scrimmage but he is explosive through open running lanes and he can be a very good change of pace back at the next level.
